I always loved Saturday mornings.

To me, they aren’t something that comes at the end of a busy week. Rather, they are something that marks the beginning of another beautiful adventure.

Growing up, it was the day when my mom would go to the market and come back home with baskets full of fresh fruit and vegetables. She would hand them off to my grandmother (who lived with us and was in charge of cooking), change clothes and start straightening out and cleaning our apartment.

I would clean my room too, throw out stuff I collected and didn’t need, and organize my school work (when you live in a small apartment, everything you own has to have its place. If you bring something new in, something old must go.)

For me, it was like a ritual of closing another week of work, cleansing from any stress and pressures that we might have experienced, and preparing for a fresh new start.

And this new start began with slowing down (no alarm clocks, no rushing). We would share a nice family meal, enjoy music or a movie in the evening, rest and do a lot of nothing on Sunday – before we would rush into another productive week.

Doesn’t that make so much sense?

Starting with a cleanse, then pausing and connecting with those we love before we begin another rush of activities seems very natural.

I guess it’s all about how you look at it. You can say that the rest is the end of the previous cycle, but it also makes a beautiful way to start something new. No athlete would start another game, or a race, without rest, warming up and a huddle with their team members.

Before I perform, I always need some time to breathe out mental clutter, to stretch my body and shake out any tensions, and take in a deep breath that brings me the presence of mind and heart. I also love to hang out and connect with my band before the show.

I took a long time this winter to rest and hang out with people I love (my mama especially). I wanted to be ready to jump into my new intentions and goals for 2020 right away – along with the rest of the coaches that fill my social media with excitement and promise of the ‘best year ever’!

But I wasn’t. I needed a little longer pause…

I needed a good long Saturday to throw out some old stuff and cross out a few projects I knew I couldn’t handle this year. And I needed a Sunday (that stretched over a whole week) of just laying around and huddling with my people 🙂

I hope you are allowing yourself to listen to the rhythms and the needs of your own mind, body and soul, and that you’re not feeling pressured by the world around you.

Have a great beginning of a new adventure!
