For the first time ever, I am actually ahead of Christmas! Well, maybe not ever, just since before I had children 🙂 And maybe not ahead, just not terribly behind!

I got all the shopping done and my Christmas cards actually arrived with plenty of time for me to write them and send them out (before January LOL)!

But, I haven’t written them yet…

I did other things though… I wrapped presents and I prepared table settings for hosting family dinners. I even baked a gluten-free walnut roll (which is a delicious Croatian traditional bread called ‘orehnjaca’). But I did NOT write those Christmas cards or send them out.

On Thursday night, the house was quiet, everything was put away, and I sat down with a stack of cards in front of me.

I then checked my email… and Instagram… and FB. I commented on a few posts from friends. Then I saw the TV remote on the table and turned a Christmas movie on. ‘I should really let myself relax tonight‘, I thought, ‘and write the cards tomorrow. Or next week. I always send them out late anyway.’

I smiled at these thoughts and turned the TV off. I sat there for a few minutes doing nothing. I wanted to reflect on this and try to understand what was really going on in my brain…

Was I just tired from working and touring over the past few months and in need of an evening of doing nothing?

Was this just a case of simple procrastination? Or was it a choice my subconscious mind made for me because it preferred familiarity over change (even if it’s a positive change – like not feeling guilty for sending out those cards long AFTER Christmas).

All this brought me to a whole lot of other thoughts to reflect on…

What other patterns in our lives are we holding onto because they are simply familiar?

What old habits (big or small, life-altering or seemingly insignificant) are we not willing to let go of? What would happen if we did let go of them?

What if Christmas doesn’t have to look the same as you think it should? What if your mind – set on a certain thing – is creating the very resistance to something new and beautiful happening to you?

What if we are all missing the miracles of Love and Life itself because we are too busy doing the things we are used to doing?

(Seriously, do you think Mary would ever say “yes” to the Angel Gabriel if she wasn’t willing to embrace something new and beautiful? Or if she was too focused on doing what she was supposed to do as a young Jewish woman in year 1 BC?)

One day this past weekend I sat with a cup of tea and a slice of my gluten-free walnut roll. It was excellent! Actually it was dry and not as fluffy and tasty as the regular one. BUT my stomach didn’t hurt; I didn’t feel bloated and sick for the rest of the day.

I was very happy to make that change – and go on a gluten-free diet – in order to avoid physical discomfort and pain that I had been experiencing.

But we don’t have to wait to experience pain in order to bring about change in our lives. Pain is usually a very strong motivator… but so is Love.

Try it! This is a good time for it!

Speaking of old and familiar, here is a beautiful Christmas song for you 🙂
