There is a commercial for Etsy running on TV. I’ve seen it dozens of times and every single time I tear up and my heart melts a little.

It’s so incredibly hard, sweet, sad, hopeful, creative and resilient, and everything I want you and me – and our ‘collective’ us – to be, for the remainder of this crazy (and still precious) year, and for all the days ahead.

I caught myself watching TV just to catch this commercial, so I can experience it again. Then I remembered it’s 2020 and I Googled it. (LOL)

Here is what happens in the video:

… a couple grapples with not being able to see their grandkids over the holidays this year. The ad cuts to a Christmas morning video call between the grandmother and her grandchild, who watches her open their gift — a stuffed animal version of a drawing her grandchild created. “Look, the present’s me!” her grandchild announces. “You’re supposed to hug it when you can’t see us.” (Watch it here)

This moment in which the grandma holds the gift, is the moment where I think of how there is ALWAYS a way to connect and find solutions.

It’s our willingness to embrace and adapt to the change. It takes a lot of energy to resist and fight something that ruined our plans. But when we give up resistance, all that energy can be redirected toward something productive and positive.

In my coaching training, I learned that imagination (and the creativity that comes with it) is a wonderful tool to use when we hit a wall and can’t find a way to go on.

Imagination gives us permission to step out of the firm rules of reality into the fantastical world where everything is possible. Employing miracles (or fairy godmothers) gives us an opportunity to see ourselves on the other side of our problem without worrying about how we will get there.

And once we catch a glimpse (it’s actually an experience), even if it’s only for a moment, and only in our head and heart, a lead might reveal itself. Or at a minimum, we will feel reenergized to look for that next right step that will get us there.

These past few months, I’ve been thinking about the scientists who spend hours and hours in their labs, hitting the walls of failed experiments until they find the tiniest movement toward the vaccine that our whole world needs so badly right now.

So… how can you use your gifts of Imagination and Creativity to bring joy and togetherness into this year’s holidays?

Music

Last week we launched a new music video “We Need A Little Christmas.”

Brian, David, my sister Sanya, and I put this together in October and we had so much fun doing it! We picked this song because it expresses what we all need:

a little music,
need a little laughter,
need a little singing,
ringing through the rafter,
And we need a little snappy
happy ever after
need a little Christmas now

Watch it here and share it with a friend who would enjoy it as well 🙂
